New layout at ICM factory in Aranjuez
ICM (Integral de Conexión y Montajes, S.L.), a Grupo Espacio Industrial company, has started a process of changing the layout of its factory in Aranjuez (Madrid, Spain). There, it develops manufacturing solutions for system integrators and electromechanical equipment, among which are includes the production of custom wire harness of all kinds.
Optimizing the layout is a key factor influencing production performance. In other words, properly arranging the elements of the factory, such as machines and equipment, the storage area, etc. is a strategic factor for any organization, insofar as it influences the efficiency of its operations.
When deciding to tackle a new layout, it is advisable to carry out a previous exercise to identify and analyze all the elements that make up the plant: The manufacturing process, machinery, materials, labor, buildings, security services for personnel, material and machinery, as well as the flow of personnel and materials.
On the other hand, the new layout of the factory must make it possible to achieve company objectives aimed at eliminating possible problems detected and / or responding to its needs. Among them, for example:
- the optimization of the use of space, machines …
- the improvement of the information flow of materials and people
- flexibility to adapt to structural changes
- the reinforcement of the quality of the products
- increasing the comfort and safety of staff
- improving customer interaction
Plant distribution considerations are fundamental for Lean Manufacturing, since they are closely related to reducing waste, especially those related to transportation and movements.
It can also contribute to the reduction of delivery times, to the extent that the new design can affect the continuous flow and minimize the work in progress, by allowing to optimize the movement of machines and workstations, for example.
